Charlotte’s AI Vision

As an R1 university and a primary driver of our region's economy, UNC Charlotte is embracing AI's potential while helping faculty, staff and students navigate its ethical considerations responsibly.

Risk, Errors and Ethics of AI use

Generative AI is a powerful tool for innovation, but using it responsibly requires active risk management. Use campuswide tools whenever possible (Gemini, Copilot, NotebookLM, Zoom AI Companion). Before incorporating AI into your work, take action to address these core limitations and ethical considerations:

Bias In, Bias Out
Generative AI can perpetuate biases present in its training data
Transparency of Algorithms
Lack of transparency in AI decision-making processes
High Cost
Training and maintaining generative AI models is expensive
Data Privacy
Risks of sensitive data being exposed or misused
Intellectual Property
Challenges in protecting and respecting copyrights
Misinformation
Potential for generating and spreading false information
Environmental Impact
High-energy consumption for training models
